Dog diarrhea: when should you see a veterinarian?

Dietary causes are among the most frequent triggers for diarrhea in dogs. A sudden change in food, eating table scraps, consuming spoiled material, or dietary indiscretion can all lead to loose stools. In many cases, this type of diarrhea is self-limiting and resolves within a day or two.

Infectious causes include bacterial infections (such as Salmonella or Clostridium), viral infections (such as parvovirus, especially in unvaccinated puppies), and parasitic infections. Parasites such as Giardia, roundworms, hookworms, and coccidia are common in dogs of all ages and can cause both acute and chronic diarrhea.

Inflammatory bowel disease, food sensitivities, stress-related colitis, and certain medications (especially antibiotics) can also trigger diarrhea. Chronic or recurrent diarrhea — lasting more than a few weeks or returning repeatedly — warrants a more thorough investigation to identify the underlying cause.

Blood in diarrhea can appear as bright red streaks (hematochezia) or as a dark, tarry stool (melena). Bright red blood typically originates from the lower digestive tract — the colon or rectum — and may indicate colitis, parasites, bacterial infection, or irritation. Dark, tarry stool suggests bleeding higher in the digestive tract, such as the stomach or upper intestines.

Bloody diarrhea is generally considered more urgent than diarrhea without blood. It may indicate parvovirus in puppies, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, ingestion of a toxin or foreign object, inflammatory bowel disease, or a clotting disorder. Any dog with bloody diarrhea should be evaluated by a veterinarian, particularly if the bleeding is heavy, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms.

Your veterinarian may recommend blood work, fecal testing, X-rays, or other diagnostics to determine the cause and begin appropriate treatment. Early evaluation helps prevent complications and ensures your dog receives the care they need.

Vomiting and diarrhea occurring together is a common presentation in dogs and often suggests a gastrointestinal cause — such as dietary indiscretion, viral infection, or toxin ingestion. However, the combination of both symptoms significantly increases the rate of fluid loss, making dehydration a primary concern.

Dogs that are vomiting and having diarrhea simultaneously may refuse water, further compounding the dehydration risk. Small breeds and puppies are particularly vulnerable. Signs of dehydration include dry gums, sunken eyes, skin that tents when gently pinched, and decreased urine output.

If your dog is experiencing both vomiting and diarrhea, especially if it persists beyond a few hours or your dog cannot keep water down, veterinary evaluation is recommended. Treatment may include fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication, and diagnostic testing to identify the underlying cause.

Diarrhea causes significant fluid and electrolyte loss. When combined with decreased water intake or vomiting, dehydration can develop rapidly — especially in small dogs, puppies, and senior dogs. Dehydration impairs normal organ function and, if severe, can become life-threatening.

Signs of dehydration include dry or sticky gums, loss of skin elasticity (skin that doesn't snap back quickly when gently pinched), sunken eyes, lethargy, reduced appetite, and darker or less frequent urination. In severe cases, a dog may appear weak, have an elevated heart rate, or seem disoriented.

Ensuring your dog has access to fresh water is important, but if dehydration signs are present or your dog refuses to drink, veterinary care with fluid therapy is the safest and most effective approach. Your veterinarian can assess the degree of dehydration and administer fluids as needed to restore normal hydration.

Several intestinal parasites can cause diarrhea in dogs. Giardia is a protozoan parasite that causes watery diarrhea, often with a foul odor, and is transmitted through contaminated water or stool. Roundworms and hookworms are more common in puppies but can affect dogs of any age, causing diarrhea, vomiting, and poor body condition.

Coccidia are another protozoan parasite frequently seen in puppies and dogs in group environments such as shelters or kennels. Coccidial infections can cause watery or mucoid diarrhea and are especially concerning in young or immunocompromised animals.

Fecal examination is the primary diagnostic tool for identifying parasites. Your veterinarian will recommend a fecal test as part of the evaluation and may also recommend deworming treatment or preventive medication. Regular fecal testing, especially in puppies and newly adopted dogs, helps catch parasitic infections early.

For diarrhea that is persistent, recurrent, or accompanied by other symptoms, diagnostic testing helps identify the underlying cause. A fecal examination is typically the first step — this test detects parasites, bacteria, and other organisms that may be causing the diarrhea.

Blood work, including a complete blood count and chemistry panel, helps evaluate hydration status, check for signs of infection or inflammation, and assess organ function. If certain conditions are suspected, additional blood tests such as a pancreatic lipase level (to check for pancreatitis) may be recommended.

X-rays or ultrasound may be used to evaluate the abdomen for obstructions, masses, or other structural abnormalities. The combination of these diagnostic tools allows your veterinarian to develop an accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment plan.
