How veterinary ultrasound works
Ultrasound imaging uses a small handheld probe that sends high-frequency sound waves into the body. During an abdominal scan, your pet lies on a table while a thin layer of gel is applied to the belly to help the sound waves travel clearly. A calm patient actually produces clearer images because breathing and movement are reduced. That said, if your pet is very anxious or difficult to position, light sedation may be recommended to keep them relaxed and still. We'll discuss what makes sense for your pet before the scan begins.
Can ultrasound identify a mass?
Ultrasound can often detect a mass, characterize its appearance, and measure its size — which helps guide next steps. It can show whether a lump appears fluid-filled, solid, or mixed, and whether it involves surrounding tissue. However, ultrasound alone does not always determine whether a mass is benign or malignant. If a suspicious finding appears, your veterinarian may recommend a fine-needle aspirate, biopsy, or additional testing to get a definitive answer.
