Why is my dog vomiting?

Dogs are naturally curious eaters, and dietary indiscretion — eating something unusual, spoiled, or rich — is one of the most common triggers for an episode of vomiting. This type of vomiting is usually acute and resolves within a day without significant complications.

However, vomiting can also be caused by bacterial or viral infections, parasites, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic conditions such as kidney or liver disease, and ingestion of toxins or foreign objects. Some medications can also cause vomiting as a side effect.

Vomiting and regurgitation are two distinct processes that are often confused. Vomiting is an active process — your dog will typically show signs of nausea first, such as drooling, lip-licking, restlessness, or abdominal contractions, before expelling stomach contents. The vomited material is usually partially digested and may contain bile.

Regurgitation, on the other hand, is a passive process. Food comes back up without the heaving or retching associated with vomiting. It often occurs shortly after eating, and the material that comes up is typically undigested and tube-shaped, matching the shape of the esophagus.

This distinction matters because the causes are very different. Repeated regurgitation may point to an esophageal problem, while vomiting more often suggests a stomach, intestinal, or systemic issue.
