Why is my dog so itchy?

Flea allergy dermatitis occurs when a dog develops a hypersensitivity to proteins in flea saliva. Unlike a normal flea bite that causes mild irritation, dogs with FAD experience an exaggerated immune response that leads to severe, persistent itching — often centered on the lower back, tail base, and inner thighs.

Effective flea control for all pets in the household is the foundation of managing FAD. A veterinarian can recommend appropriate flea prevention products and help develop a year-round flea control plan, which is essential even in indoor-only environments where fleas can still be introduced.

Environmental allergies (atopy) typically develop between one and three years of age and may worsen over time. Dogs with atopy may have seasonal itching during certain pollen seasons or experience symptoms year-round if they are allergic to indoor allergens such as dust mites.

Diagnosis involves a combination of clinical history, physical examination, and potentially intradermal allergy testing or serum allergy testing. When ear infections keep returning despite appropriate treatment, it is important to investigate the underlying cause rather than treating each episode in isolation. A comprehensive approach that addresses both the ear disease and the primary skin condition typically produces better long-term outcomes.

Sarcoptic mange (scabies) is caused by a highly contagious mite that burrows into the skin, causing severe, often relentless itching. It commonly affects the ear margins, elbows, and abdomen. Because it is contagious, other dogs — and sometimes humans — in the household may also show signs.

Demodex mites are normally present in small numbers on canine skin, but in dogs with immature or compromised immune systems, they can multiply and cause patches of hair loss and sometimes inflammation. Diagnosis typically involves deep skin scrapes examined under a microscope. Treatment is determined by the specific mite identified.

A thorough dermatologic evaluationusually includes skin scrapes (to look for mites), impression smears and cytology (to check for bacteria and yeast), and a review of the dog's flea prevention status. If allergies are suspected, additional testing — including intradermal or serum allergy testing and elimination diet trials — may be recommended.
